The American aerospace and defense contractor, Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) has secured a significant contract with the U.S. Air Force valued at $64.2mn. The contract, which runs through August 2027 focuses on the refurbishment and ongoing maintenance of aircraft operated by Uzbekistan, as reported by the U.S. Department of Defense.
The scope of work under this contract includes comprehensive aircraft refurbishment, field support and logistics services. These activities will be conducted in Uzbekistan, ensuring that the country’s aviation assets remain operational and well-maintained over the next three years. The funding for this contract is provided through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, a U.S. government initiative that facilitates sales of defense articles and services to allied nations.
SNC was awarded this contract through a sole source process, it was the only company selected to perform the required work. This decision reiterates the U.S. government's confidence in SNC's capabilities and its track record in providing high-quality aviation maintenance and support services. This contract builds on previous agreements and partnerships between the United States and Uzbekistan in the realm of defense and aviation. The work to be carried out under this contract is part of a broader strategy to enhance Uzbekistan’s aviation capabilities, aligning with the country’s ambitions to develop a more robust and modernized fleet.
The introduction of the Pilatus PC-12 business jet into the Uzbekistan Airways fleet in 2021 marked a significant milestone in the development of the nation’s business aviation sector. Although Uzbekistan Airways has not disclose the exact terms of acquiring the aircraft whether through purchase, lease or rental the event was heralded as the beginning of a new era in Uzbek aviation.
Later in 2021, the press service of Uzbekistan Airways informed spot.uz that they made the strategic decision to upgrade from the PC-12 to the more advanced Pilatus PC-24 model. The PC-24, also manufactured by Swiss company Pilatus Aircraft offers greater capacity and advanced features compared to its predecessor accommodating up to 10 passengers. Both aircraft models are tailored for corporate transportation and are frequently used for government delegation flights.
