The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has received a boost with a $10mn contribution from South Korea. This funding, provided through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), is set to enhance sustainable agricultural production in Tajikistan, aligning with the country's priorities for food security and improved nutrition.
KOICA Tajikistan Country Director Jeong Minyoung highlighted the importance of this initiative.
“The South Korean Government has officially designated agriculture as a key area of cooperation to strengthen food security in Tajikistan. This initiative is particularly symbolic, as it aims to enhance agricultural productivity and inclusivity for vulnerable young farmers living in remote areas through the use of digital technologies,” Country Director Jeong Minyoung noted.
The funding will assist approximately 200,000 individuals, including 40,000 youth, by promoting skills and knowledge in agribusiness and rural development. It will support income-generating activities, market access, asset creation, and livelihoods-building programs that incorporate digital solutions. These efforts are designed to bolster resilience to economic and environmental shocks, improve smallholder farmer productivity, and ensure a more equitable and sustainable agricultural sector.
“The development and institution of sustainable agriculture practices will ensure food security for present and future generations. WFP is grateful for the Republic of Korea’s support to help the country promote improved agriculture and food security in Tajikistan,” WFP Representative and Country Director in Tajikistan Adham Musallam expressed gratitude.
This funding comes at a critical time, with the FAO/WFP Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission (CFSAM) reporting that over 1.5mn people in Tajikistan faced acute food insecurity in 2023. The number of acutely food insecure individuals has recently decreased from 20% to 16%, showing some progress. WFP remains committed to addressing food insecurity and supporting vulnerable families throughout the country.
The WFP, the world's largest humanitarian organization, continues to save lives in emergencies and use food assistance as a pathway to peace and prosperity. Meanwhile, KOICA, established in 1991, continues its mission to promote global prosperity and peace through effective development cooperation.
