Uzbekistan to send 90 athletes to compete in 19 sports, with debut qualifications in football, diving, archery, and women's wrestling to XXXIII Summer Olympic Games.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was briefed on the ongoing efforts to foster mass sports and expand the Olympic movement in Uzbekistan, on July 22.
Development of Mass Sports
Sport is flourishing in Uzbekistan as a key factor in promoting public health and nurturing a healthy generation. The country boasts a robust infrastructure that includes stadiums, training halls, workout grounds, running tracks, sports schools, and complexes.
Initiatives such as physical education in mahallas (local communities), regional competitions, and the Five Initiatives Olympiad are notably expanding the number of sports enthusiasts. These programs are instrumental in identifying talented and promising young individuals, who are then groomed into professional athletes.
Strategic Focus in 2024
The State Program for the Implementation of the Strategy "Uzbekistan - 2030," in the Year of Support for Youth and Business, outlines numerous tasks in the realm of sports. In line with these goals, educational institutions are being equipped with essential sports gear. The hours of operation for stadiums and other sports facilities in mahallas have been extended to increase accessibility. To attract 10mn people to participate in mass sports, local marathons and competitions in football, volleyball, table tennis, chess, checkers, running, and kurash are being organized.
Efforts are also being made to enhance sports conditions in various regions, digitalize sports training processes, and adopt best practices.
Olympic Preparations
President Mirziyoyev was also updated on the preparations for the XXXIII Summer Olympic Games, scheduled to be held from July 26 to August 11 in Paris, France. This prestigious event will see the participation of over 10,000 athletes from 206 countries.
Uzbekistan will send a contingent of 90 athletes competing in 19 sports. For the first time, Uzbekistan has qualified for football, diving, archery, and women's wrestling. Notably, 36% of Uzbekistan's Olympians are women.
Comprehensive Training Programs
Uzbekistan's athletes have undergone rigorous preparations for the upcoming games. An individual strategy was developed for each athlete, ensuring their participation in qualifying competitions and training events both domestically and abroad. Training facilities have been established in 15 Olympic and Paralympic centers and sports bases across the regions. Regular in-depth medical examinations were conducted, alongside systematic measures for medical, biological, and pharmacological support.
President Mirziyoyev extended his best wishes to the athletes for their success at the Olympic Games. He emphasized the importance of selecting and supporting talented youth to form a high-quality reserve for the national teams.
