Uzbekistan's oil and gas giant, Sanoat Energetika Guruhi (Saneg), has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first company in Central Asia to implement a project aimed at reducing methane emissions from its production assets. This landmark initiative is registered with the Emissions Trading Agency (DEHSt) under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Environment Germany, Saneg reports on May 15.
Saneg recently completed the initial phase of a comprehensive technical upgrade program across its infrastructure facilities, resulting in substantial reductions in methane emissions. The project, conducted in collaboration with VEMA SA from Switzerland and ICA-Finance AS from Norway, leveraged advanced leak detection and repair (LDAR) technology to achieve impressive results.
The LDAR certification attained by Saneg's oil and gas production sites reflects the company's dedication to environmental responsibility and technological advancement. Fazylov hailed this achievement as a pivotal moment in Saneg's history, highlighting the company's unwavering commitment to meeting the highest standards of environmental stewardship.
The project, developed within the Clean Development Mechanism methodology established by the European Fuel Quality Directive, received funding from each of the three partners. By the end of 2024, Saneg anticipates a further reduction of approximately 410,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year, demonstrating its steadfast commitment to sustainability and environmental protection.
As the largest private oil and gas producer in Uzbekistan, Saneg plays a pivotal role in the country's energy landscape, accounting for a significant portion of both oil and gas production. The collaboration with VEMA SA and ICA-Finance AS underscores Saneg's dedication to leveraging international expertise in advancing environmental sustainability initiatives.
Mikhail Partykevich, Director of VEMA SA, lauded Saneg's commitment to sustainable development, emphasizing the significance of the partnership in achieving shared environmental goals. Similarly, ICA-Finance AS brings over two decades of experience in managing projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, further enriching the collaborative efforts towards sustainability.
The project's implementation involved the discovery and repair of approximately 200 leaks across Saneg's facilities in Karshi, Mubarek, and Andijan. Utilizing modern analytical systems, including unmanned aerial vehicles, underscores Saneg's commitment to leveraging innovative technologies in environmental conservation efforts.
