The Central Bank of Uzbekistan hosted a meeting with members of the Visa international payment system delegation, led by Senior Vice President and Regional Manager Cristina Doros. The meeting aimed to discuss key topics, including the current status of Uzbekistan's payment systems infrastructure, cyber security measures within the country, and initiatives aimed at enhancing financial literacy among the population.
It is important to note that In the past year alone, Uzbekistan faced a staggering 11.2 mn cyber attacks targeting web resources within the country, the Cyber Security Center reports.
The dialogue also delved into matters regarding the alignment of Uzbekistan's legislative framework with international legal standards, particularly focusing on regulations governing the entry of international payment companies into the Uzbek market.
Visa payment cards hold substantial significance within Uzbekistan's financial landscape. In 2023, a total of 225,942 cards were issued, marking an increase from the 102,158 cards distributed in 2022. As of January 1, an impressive 73.7 mn Visa payment cards were in circulation across the country.
The upward trajectory in Visa card issuance persisted into early 2024, with 71,117 cards issued between January and February alone, representing a surge compared to the previous year. Data from the Uzbek Open Data Portal indicates an annual increase of 23,353 cards, totalling over 47,764 issued cards.
