In the third round of the group stage at the Asian U-23 Football Championship in Qatar, Uzbekistan's youth national team secured a 3-0 win against Vietnam on April 24. This victory placed Uzbekistan U-23 at the top of Group D with 9 points, ensuring their progression to the quarter-finals.
Uzbekistan's scoring began in the 4th minute with a goal by attacking midfielder Alisher Odilov. Later, in the 36th minute, striker Ruslanbek Zhiyanov expanded the lead by scoring from an acute angle outside the penalty area. Odilov completed his double in the 40th minute, successfully heading in a cross from Saidazamat Mirsaidov.
Although a potential penalty for Uzbekistan in the 85th minute was reviewed, the VAR system ultimately did not confirm the call.
Uzbekistan U-23 is set to face Saudi Arabia on April 26 at 19:00. Saudi Arabia has recorded wins over Tajikistan U-23 and Thailand, but suffered a defeat against Iraq, positioning them as significant competitors.
The Asian Under-23 Championship, held from April 15 to May 3 in Qatar, functions as a qualifier for the 2024 Summer Olympics in France. The top three teams will secure spots as Asian representatives at the Olympics, while the fourth-best team will participate in a play-off match. The tournament includes 16 teams, with Saudi Arabia as the defending champions.
