A unique opportunity is on the horizon for fruit and vegetable exporters from Egypt and Morocco as they are invited to participate in a trade mission to Uzbekistan, EastFruit reported. Facilitated by the FAO/EBRD Project: Food Security Package SEMED – Diversifying and adding value to export markets, this trade mission aims to open up new avenues for produce traders. Scheduled for May 20-22, 2024, the mission promises to connect participants with key stakeholders in Uzbekistan's burgeoning market.
Central Asia, often overlooked by produce traders, is currently experiencing rapid economic and population growth, making it one of the world's fastest-growing regions. With a combined population comparable to Germany and a territory larger than India, the region has witnessed a significant increase in imports of fresh oranges in recent years. Uzbekistan, in particular, stands out as the largest importer of ware potatoes globally, presenting numerous opportunities for exporters of mandarins, berries, palm dates, avocadoes, mangoes, and other products.
Kazakhstan, another significant player in the region, boasts the highest per-capita income among former Soviet republics and is the largest net importer of fruits and vegetables. While Uzbekistan itself is a major exporter, its market dynamics and product preferences differ substantially from those of Egypt and Morocco. Egypt has already established itself as an important supplier of oranges to the region, with its market presence growing steadily.
The trade mission, organized by the FAO/EBRD Team, will facilitate business-to-business (B2B) meetings with leading importers and supermarket chain representatives from Uzbekistan, and potentially Kazakhstan. Additionally, participants will receive a detailed professional market overview and have the opportunity to partake in a study tour of produce trading facilities and wholesale markets near the capital city of Tashkent. To ensure participants are well-prepared, prior training sessions will be conducted online.
While the project will cover the costs associated with training, event organization, B2B meetings, and the study tour, participants will be responsible for their travel and accommodation expenses. Up to 12 companies from Egypt and Morocco will be selected to participate based on their submitted applications.
