Following the deadly terrorist attack at the Crocus City Hall near Moscow, with over 130 casualties, security concerns in Russia have intensified. Sergey Mironov, leader of the Spravedlivaya Rossiya party, suggests introducing a visa system for Central Asian nations to counter the growing threat.
Mironov believes that this measure will not only bolster national security but also foster a truly reciprocal relationship between the Russian Federation and its southern neighbours. He insists that the first step should be the introduction of a visa regime with Central Asian nations, arguing that without this, it would be impossible to establish order at the border, which is currently crucial for managing migration and thwarting terrorist attacks.
Step towards security, not unfriendly gesture
Mironov asserts that the revocation of visa-free travel should not be misconstrued as a hostile act towards neighbouring countries. He anticipates their understanding of this decision. He points out that Russia is currently engaged in a challenging military conflict.
Open borders are exploited by adversaries who utilise neighbouring states as launching pads for planning disruptive activities against Russia. Therefore, Mironov believes that the termination of visa-free travel is a move towards enhancing security and cooperation across the entire Eurasian region.
