Starlink mobile communications achieves 17 mbit/s speeds - SpaceX
SpaceX has reported successful tests of mobile communications via its Starlink satellites. The tests, as reported by PCMag, demonstrated the effectiveness of Direct to Cell technology, which "meets or exceeds test performance targets," as per to the company's report to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
The Direct to Cell technology has been validated on popular smartphone models from Apple, Google, and Samsung, all operating on the T-Mobile network. The results showcased impressive data download speeds via Starlink, reaching up to 17 Mbit/s. Remarkably, the new connection proved reliable in various environments, including urban and rural areas, indoors, outdoors, and even under tree cover.
During the two-month testing period, SpaceX encountered no interference issues, indicating the robustness of the Direct to Cell operation. The emitted signal strength indoors remained within FCC limits, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
One of the key advantages of this new technology is its capability to facilitate communication via satellite, enabling SMS and text messaging through instant messengers. SpaceX plans to expand this service globally, with the aim of offering SMS capabilities in all countries where the Starlink network operates.
