To counter the environmental challenges posed by the Aral Sea's desiccation, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Uzbekistan is set to resume sowing saxaul seeds from the air. The innovative initiative is a part of the national plan to establish forest plantations on the barren bed of the Aral Sea, aiming to address the ongoing environmental crisis caused by its shrinking waters.
Underlining the importance of the initiative, the Ministry of Emergency Situations highlighted the significant afforestation achievements in previous years. Teams from the Ministry, in collaboration with the Forestry Agency, have successfully established expansive forests of desert plants on the former seabed.
The upcoming aerial seeding operation represents a strategic step forward in Uzbekistan's ongoing efforts to combat the environmental impact of the Aral Sea's depletion. This initiative aligns with the broader national agenda, fostering environmental sustainability and ecological restoration.
Earlier contributions to this cause were evident during the autumn "Yashil Makon" campaign, where Uzbek citizens actively participated in planting trees and vegetation across 28,000 hectares on the desiccated bottom of the Aral Sea.
The "Yashil Makon" program, stemming from the President of Uzbekistan's decrees in 2019 and 2021, is part of a nationwide effort to safeguard the environment. This initiative focuses on protecting various environmental elements like air, water, land, soil, biodiversity, and natural areas from human activities and harmful influences. Additionally, the program aims to enhance mechanisms for expanding environmental coverage, reducing ecological impact, and fostering sustainable development in settlements.
Earlier, it was reported that saxauls planted in earlier projects are now visible from space.
