In a bid to mitigate the impact of sandstorms, the cultivation of saxaul trees has commenced in Surkhandarya. The initiative aims to plant 100,000 saplings and distribute 80 tons of seeds across a total of 15,000 hectares, with 1,000 hectares allocated to each region within the province, Surkhandarya regional government reports.
The southern districts of Surkhandarya, namely Sherabad, Muzrabot, Angor, and Termez, as well as the urban climate of Termiz, experience strong winds and dust phenomena throughout the year, predominantly originating from the north and west, including regions in Iran, Turkmenistan, and neighboring Afghanistan.
Experts note that the region witnesses up to 151 days of wind and dust annually, leading to humid and dusty air, posing significant threats to agriculture, human health, and environmental cleanliness. The issue gained attention during the president's visit to the region, prompting efforts to address the challenges posed by climate change and minimize the consequences of dust impact. As part of these initiatives, practical work has commenced, with the launch of the "green belts" project, focusing on expanding saxaul plantations in desert areas.
The ongoing phase of the project involves the planting of saxaul seedlings and the sowing of seeds in the "Kattaqum" massif, connecting the Termez and Angor districts. The comprehensive plan envisions sowing 100,000 saplings and distributing 80 tons of seeds imported from Karakalpakstan, covering a total of 15,000 hectares, with each region receiving 1,000 hectares.
