As of December 2023, Uzbekistan was home to 46,100 family enterprises, marking a 21.8% decrease from the previous year, Statistics Agency reports.
Regional distribution
Most of these enterprises are located in the Samarkand region, with a count of 8,100. The Ferghana and Khorezm regions follow, hosting 5,100 and 5,000 family enterprises, respectively.
Changes in employment regulations
The regulations for family businesses have seen significant changes this year. Previously, family businesses were permitted to employ up to three permanent employees. However, this limit has been increased to five, providing more opportunities for employment within these enterprises.
Financial support for family businesses
In a move to further support the growth of family businesses, the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, issued an instruction in August last year. The directive increased the limit of unsecured loans for family businesses from UZS 33 mn ($2,426) to UZS 100 mn (8,087). This substantial increase in financial support is expected to provide a much-needed boost to these enterprises.
Drawing from the expertise of Japan, Uzbekistan aimed to establish business incubators and accelerators in various regions to bolster them. This initiative will also see the participation of specialists from Japan.
