Iran’s Interior Minister, Ahmad Vahidi, has called on the Taliban to create conditions within Afghanistan that would allow Afghan migrants to return home. This statement comes in light of the significant Afghan population residing in Iran, which is estimated to be around 5 mn.
Vahidi emphasized that immigrants lacking the necessary permissions to stay in Iran should be deported. However, those possessing valid permits are allowed to work and participate in economic activities within the country.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Iran hosts over 3.4 mn refugee and refugee-like populations, making it the second-largest refugee-hosting country globally after Türkiye. The majority of these refugees are Afghans. The UNHCR also reports that Iran hosts over 1.1 mn Afghans of varying status, including 360,000 Afghans with Iranian resident permits, 267,000 family passport holders, and 500,000 undocumented Afghans.
The UNHCR commends Iran’s inclusive policies, which grant refugees access to education, health services, and livelihood opportunities. These progressive measures demonstrate Iran’s commitment to inclusivity and solidarity, ensuring that no child’s education is compromised due to forced displacement.
