The European Investment Bank (EIB) is working on advancing sustainability and connectivity projects in Uzbekistan and the wider Central Asia region. These initiatives are aimed at transitioning toward a sustainable, climate-neutral economic model.
In Uzbekistan, the EIB is focusing on sustainable connectivity projects, with a particular emphasis on integrating the country into the Middle Corridor's operation. This strategy aligns with the European Global Gateway strategy, which aims to enhance secure links in the energy and transport sectors. It complements the significant support the EIB has provided to the East-West corridor in the Southern Caucasus.
The Middle Corridor serves as a vital transportation and trade pathway, connecting Asia and Europe while offering an alternative to traditional Northern and Southern Corridors. Originating in China, it spans several Central Asian nations, including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. It then extends across the Caspian Sea, passing through Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey before reaching the European continent.
The Middle Corridor provides a land-based connection between eastern Asia, notably China, and Europe, offering a shorter route compared to lengthy maritime options.
The EIB's efforts in Uzbekistan and Central Asia are aligned with regional aspirations for economic progress and development, focusing on sustainability and well-connected growth. Incorporating climate-neutral and sustainable practices into economic models is essential for addressing global challenges. Uzbekistan's participation in these initiatives through the Middle Corridor underscores its role in promoting sustainable economic models and regional connectivity.
