A complex rescue operation is in progress to save American caver Mark Dickey, who has been stranded approximately 3,600 feet underground in southern Turkey for a week due to illness, CNN reported. According to a director at Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the operation is scheduled to begin on September 9, with the mission expected to last around four days.
Dickey fell ill during an exploration mission in the Morca Sinkhole, located in Morca Valley near Anamur, southern Turkey. He reportedly suffered from suspected gastrointestinal bleeding, prompting the need for external assistance. While his condition has stabilized, doctors are working to further improve his health before initiating the challenging ascent to the surface.
Rescue efforts involve 182 rescuers on-site, including 32 individuals inside the cave, where Dickey is located at a depth of 1,120 meters (3,675 feet). The cave itself presents narrow passages, making the operation particularly arduous. A stretcher will be used to assist Dickey's exit.
The rescue operation will divide the cave into seven parts, with teams from various countries, including Turkey, Hungary, Poland, Italy, Croatia, and Bulgaria, participating in the effort at different depths. The European Cave Rescue Association (ECRA) is coordinating the international response.
Dickey, who expressed gratitude for the swift response of Turkish authorities in a video message, emphasized the need for assistance in his recovery. He highlighted the solidarity within the caving community and the international cooperation required for his rescue.
Gretchen Baker from the National Cave Rescue Commission (NCRC), who has been in communication with the rescue team, cautiously expressed optimism about Dickey's improving condition. However, she noted that the rescue operation is expected to take several days due to the cave's depth and narrow passages.
The operation, considered "very rare" and "extremely difficult" by the ECRA, underscores the challenges and expertise required for cave rescues at such depths. Despite the difficulties, the international rescue teams remain committed to ensuring Dickey's safe return to the surface.
