Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on the United Nations (UN) to adapt to the realities of the 21st century and ensure the representation of voices that matter, as he prepares to host a summit of the Group of 20 (G20) major economies. Modi's remarks reflect his determination to elevate India's global standing and address pressing global issues during the upcoming G20 summit.
Modi in the interview expressed his belief that the current UN framework, rooted in a mid-20th-century approach, is ill-suited to address the complex challenges of the 21st century.
"A mid-20th century approach cannot serve the world in the 21st century," he stated.
Modi, the leader of the world's most populous country and a candidate for permanent membership in the UN Security Council is using the platform of the G20 summit, set to begin on September 9, to advocate for reforms in international institutions. He has consistently voiced his support for the inclusion of the African Union as a full member of the G20, emphasizing the importance of diverse voices in shaping global policies.
The two-day G20 summit, hosted by India, boasts an impressive guest list, including U.S. President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, among others.
Modi's call for reform extends beyond the G20, with a broader appeal to international institutions to adapt to changing global dynamics. He emphasized the need for these institutions to reassess their priorities to ensure the equitable representation of voices that have traditionally been underrepresented on the global stage.
"International institutions need to recognise changing realities, relook at their priorities. India's G20 presidency also sowed seeds of confidence in countries of the so-called third world," Modi stated.
Modi highlighted the positive outcomes of India's G20 presidency, particularly in fostering global economic cooperation. He pointed out that the G20's recognition that anti-inflation policies in one country can affect others has been crucial, especially for a country like India where inflation can disproportionately impact vulnerable populations.
In addition to economic matters, Modi also stressed the importance of international collaboration in combating cybercrime. He expressed concerns about terrorists utilizing the dark web, metaverse, and cryptocurrency for nefarious purposes, warning that these activities could have far-reaching implications for the social fabric of nations.
As the world prepares to gather for the G20 summit in India, Prime Minister Modi's call for reform and a 21st-century approach to global challenges underscores the need for international institutions to evolve in response to the changing dynamics of the modern world.
