Nizo Yamamoto, a celebrated figure in the world of Japanese animation, known for his exceptional background illustrations in various Studio Ghibli and other films, has succumbed to stomach cancer at the age of 70, Kyodo News reports.
Yamamoto's family confirmed that he passed away peacefully at his residence. Throughout his illustrious career, he made significant contributions to the visual aesthetics of iconic films, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
Yamamoto embarked on his artistic journey as an art director with the television animation series "Future Boy Conan." His influence extended to some of Studio Ghibli's most beloved works, notably contributing to the visual design of director Hayao Miyazaki's acclaimed film "Princess Mononoke."
His artistic prowess also graced other renowned animation films, including "Grave of Fireflies," directed by Isao Takahata, and "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time," brought to life by director Mamoru Hosoda.
Notably, his vibrant depictions of clouds in the 2019 anime masterpiece "Weathering With You," directed by Makoto Shinkai, earned him the affectionate moniker "Nizo clouds" among devoted fans.
Hailing from Goto, Nagasaki Prefecture in southwestern Japan, Yamamoto passed away at his residence in Saitama Prefecture, located near Tokyo. His hometown proudly hosts the "Nizo Yamamoto Art Museum," where his remarkable artwork continues to be exhibited, serving as a testament to his lasting legacy in the world of animation.
