On July 17, U.S. President Joe Biden extended an invitation for a meeting to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a phone call, DW reports.
White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby confirmed the invitation, stating that the meeting would take place in the U.S. sometime in the fall. However, the specific location, whether at the White House or in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, was not disclosed by the Biden administration.
The President remains concerned about Netanyahu's efforts to reform the Israeli judicial system. Netanyahu's office confirmed that he accepted the invitation, and both Israeli and U.S. teams will work together to coordinate the meeting details.
During the phone call, the two leaders also discussed security issues in the Middle East. They focused on countering Iran's nuclear program and addressing threats posed by Iran's proxies in the region. The conversation was described as "long and warm" by the Israeli side.
Coinciding with the conversation, the U.S. announced that it is deploying a destroyer and fighter jets to the Gulf region to deter Iran from seizing ships. This decision came after the Iranian Navy attempted to seize two merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman earlier in the month.
The U.S. Defense Department is increasing its presence in the area, collaborating with partners and allies to monitor the Strait and surrounding waters in response to the ongoing threat.
