Significant number of Spaniards have chosen to exercise their voting rights through mail-in ballots for the upcoming snap general elections on July 23. The surge in requests for mail-in voting has prompted an extension of the deadline until July 20. Approximately 2.5 mn individuals have opted for remote voting, citing the timing of the elections during the summer holiday season as the primary reason.
Despite concerns about the logistical challenges, Spain's postal service has reassured the public that it has sufficient staff to handle the substantial volume of mail-in ballots, ensuring a smooth and efficient process.
These early parliamentary elections were called by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez following the defeat of his Socialist Party in local government elections across most of the autonomous communities. The significance of this decision is reflected in the record-breaking number of Spaniards actively engaging in remote voting, indicating a strong desire to participate in the democratic process despite the prevailing vacation period.
As the July 23 elections approach, Spain is witnessing a notable shift in voter behaviour, with a larger proportion of the electorate actively utilising the mail-in voting option.
