In anticipation of the NATO summit, U.S President Biden is scheduled to visit the United Kingdom. During his visit, he intends to discuss the issue of supplying cluster munitions to Ukraine with UK Prime Minister Sunak, Euronews has reported.
The U.S' intention to supply Ukraine with cluster munitions has raised concerns among several American allies. President Biden previously referred to this decision as a "very difficult one."
Countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, and Spain have already expressed their opposition to the use of such weapons. Cluster bombs are prohibited in over 100 countries due to the danger they pose to civilian populations.
"Spain remains committed to its obligations towards Ukraine but firmly maintains that certain weapons and bombs should not be supplied under any circumstances", Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles stated.
Meanwhile, Germany emphasized that Ukraine uses weapons to liberate its territories. "We must remember that Russia has already extensively employed cluster munitions in an illegal aggressive war against Ukraine," said Steffen Seibert, the official spokesperson for the German government.
Leaders of NATO countries will gather in Vilnius on July 11-12. Ahead of the summit, U.S President Joe Biden is expected to visit the United Kingdom. It is possible that the American leader will face questions regarding Washington's decision to supply cluster munitions to Kyiv.
