In a bid to prevent further outbreaks of violence and unrest, French authorities have implemented a ban on the possession, transport, and sale of fireworks leading up to the annual Bastille Day celebrations. The ban, which comes into immediate effect, will last until July 15. The decision follows a week of nationwide riots triggered by the tragic police shooting of a 17-year-old in Paris.
Bastille Day, the national day of France, is a symbolic event that commemorates the historic storming of the Bastille fortress in 1789. Traditionally, the occasion is marked by vibrant parades and spectacular fireworks displays throughout the country. However, president Emmanuel Macron's government has taken this precautionary measure to avoid any potential risk of serious public disorder.
The recent unrest was ignited by the shooting of a teenager Nahel during a routine police check in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris, in late June. Nahel, who had Algerian roots, became the focal point of widespread protests, reigniting long-standing frustrations related to allegations of systemic racism, unemployment, and social inequalities. The resulting riots represented the most significant outbreak of urban violence in France since the events of 2005.
Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne acknowledged the sensitivity of the situation, recognizing the need for careful handling of the days leading up to Bastille Day. The ban on fireworks aims to curtail the availability of potential weapons and reduce the likelihood of further confrontations and property damage.
Law enforcement officials reported that during the recent demonstrations, fireworks were commonly employed as weapons by many participating youths. The ban is thus expected to mitigate the potential for such incidents and ensure the safety and security of both public and private property.
The ban will not impact official municipal fireworks displays organized by authorized entities. These professionally supervised events will still take place, providing an opportunity for the public to safely enjoy the traditional splendor of Bastille Day celebrations.
