Billboards featuring an image of Russian President Vladimir Putin holding the sacred Muslim book, the Quran, have appeared in various cities in Lebanon, report RIA Novosti correspondent on July 9.
At the end of June, Putin visited the Juma Mosque in Derbent, considered one of the oldest in the world, where he was presented with a Quran. The head of state stated that disrespect towards the Quran is considered a crime in Russia, and the country will always abide by these legislative rules.
The billboards that recently appeared in different Lebanese cities depict Putin embracing the Quran.
The caption reads: "Guardian and Defender of Religions."
Organiser of the campaign, Muhammad Nasrutdin, the head of the Russian-Lebanese cooperation office "RosLivan," the Russian president demonstrated to the world how religions should be respected, especially in light of the Quran burning incident in Sweden.
"Western countries are trying to plunge the world into the tunnel of human and religious racism and moral decay... A person burned a copy of the sacred Quran in Sweden with the approval of state authorities, and we witnessed a barbaric campaign against Muslims in various countries," he said.
Nasrutdin stated that in Lebanon, they are grateful to the Russian president for his stance on religions, particularly Islam.
"He condemned what happened in Sweden. It is not just a position, but also a meaningful step. He visited a mosque during Eid al-Adha and held the Quran, saying, disrespect for this sacred book in Russia is a crime,” the agency's source added.
On the first day of Eid al-Adha, on June 28, an event involving the desecration and burning of the Quran took place at the main mosque in Stockholm. This incident sparked outrage in the Muslim world, and it was condemned by Algeria, Afghanistan, Egypt, Indonesia, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and other countries.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that impunity for the participants of this incident could lead to unpredictable catastrophic consequences and called on the international community to counter such unlawful actions.
