The 8th OPEC International Seminar, OPEC's flagship energy event, commenced on July 5 in Vienna, gathering ministers from OPEC member countries, oil-producing and consuming nations, international organizations, oil and energy companies, academics, and industry experts. With the theme "Towards a sustainable and inclusive energy transition," the two-day seminar aims to foster dialogue and collaboration to address the challenges and opportunities facing the global oil industry.
During the seminar's opening ceremony, OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais emphasized the importance of achieving a sustainable energy transition that balances the needs of current and future generations, as well as the relationship between development and environmental protection. Al Ghais also highlighted the significance of inclusivity, stating that multiple pathways exist to tackle climate change and that all voices should be heard in discussions about the transition.
Antonio Oburu Ondo, the president of the OPEC Conference in 2023 and Equatorial Guinea's minister of mines and hydrocarbons, expressed his belief that the seminar would serve as a platform for dialogue between OPEC and oil-consuming countries. He emphasized the seminar's role in addressing the major challenges and opportunities faced by the global oil industry.
The 8th OPEC International Seminar features a diverse program, including high-level roundtables, ministerial sessions, and exhibitions. Participants will engage in discussions on key issues such as energy transition, energy poverty alleviation, energy security, climate change policies, investment, technology, and innovation. This comprehensive agenda reflects OPEC's commitment to facilitating a sustainable and inclusive energy future.
About OPEC
The primary objective of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is to synchronize and consolidate the petroleum strategies of its Member Countries, while ensuring stability in the global oil markets. Current members of OPEC include Algeria, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, the Republic of the Congo, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela. This is aimed at guaranteeing a consistent, economical, and reliable provision of petroleum to consumers, as well as maintaining a stable income for producers and a fair profit for investors in the petroleum industry.
The OPEC International Seminar series was inaugurated in 2001, providing a vital platform for global energy stakeholders to come together and exchange insights and expertise. The previous seminar, held in 2018, attracted nearly 1,000 participants from over 50 countries and regions. Building upon this success, the 8th OPEC International Seminar is set to offer an even more comprehensive and impactful experience.
