Kazakhstan Parliament's Mazhilis deputy, Maksat Tolykbay, claimed that the businessman Kairat Satybaldyuly, nephew of Nursultan Nazarbayev and currently incarcerated, has purchased a hotel.
Tolykbay stated that Satybaldyuly, while in jail, struck a deal with Baidala LLP. Allegedly, a notary came to the prison and Satybaldyuly transferred $13.4mn to the company.
Tolykbay shared the specifics of the transaction on his Facebook page, mentioning that he got this information during a meeting with the Hilton hotel's management and staff in Almaty.
He relayed that the hotel's owner said it was constructed in 2019 via a franchise agreement, backed by a bank loan of $9.4mn secured against the hotel. The hotel temporarily suspended operations due to the 2020 pandemic, at which time, the bank transferred the hotel to a collection agency. This agency then sold it to Baidala LLP for a significantly lower price than the market value. The owner of the hotel has labeled this a raider takeover and named Kairat Satybaldy as the person behind it all.
Tolykbay has forwarded all complaints received from applicants to the anticorruption body and the Prosecutor General's Office. The people who contacted him are requesting that the authorities handle this case fairly.
Kairat Satybaldy was previously sentenced by a court in the capital. He was found guilty under multiple articles and sentenced to six years in prison with confiscation and a ban from holding positions in the civil service and national companies for 10 years.
