Three more participants of the anti-government protests that took place in late 2022 and early 2023 have been executed in Iran, Iran International reports.
Majid Kozimi, Said Yakubi, and Salih Mirhoshimi were found guilty of killing security personnel during the protests. The executions were carried out on May 19, following a plea from the convicts to halt the execution. Amnesty International had previously criticized the trial of the protesters, with Kozimi claiming that he was coerced under torture.
The father of one of the convicts shared a photo on social media showing his son holding a sign proclaiming his innocence. This brings the total number of participants in the protests to seven individuals.
In 2022, Iran executed 582 people, a significant increase from the previous year. However, the actual number of executions is believed to be higher, as many cases were not publicly announced. Among those executed, there were reportedly 16 women and three minors.
The protests in Iran were sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for not wearing her hijab properly. The protests resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of arrests. Two journalists, Nilufar Hamidi, and Eloy Mohammadi, are also facing the death penalty on charges of treason and espionage.
