Kazakhstan’s farmers have appealed to authorities to allow the export of onions, as excess vegetables rot in warehouses, Daryo correspondent reports from Kazakhstan.
According to the country’s Ministry of Trade and Integration, this was done in a bid to prevent onion prices from rising, as cities such as Almaty, Akmola, Almaty, Zhetysu, Zhambyl, Karaganda, Pavlodar, and Turkestan regions, report the hikes in onion prices.
As per data, the country stores nearly 68,000 tons of onions.
‘If this is the case, Kazakhstan needs 40,000 tons for March-April. If these data are confirmed, farmers will be interviewed about the prices they are willing to pay on the domestic market. Then maybe quota will be considered. But for the time being the issue of permission to export is not being considered’, the ministry says.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Kazakhstan produces 1.2mn tons of onions and consumes only 300-350 thousand tons.
‘We show this commission the production of onions, how much on the remnants, and how much is exported. We keep the situation under control. The situation has stabilized over the past month. If these decisions were not made, then you would have to buy a bow of 500 tenges’, the press service reports.
Currently, the price of onions in large trading networks was fixed at the level of 130-260 tenge per kilogram.
