Uzbekistan expands air connectivity with South Korea as new airlines set to launch flights

Uzbekistan expands air connectivity with South Korea as new airlines set to launch flights

Several new airlines from Uzbekistan are preparing to launch regular flights to South Korea, expanding air connectivity between the two countries. This development was confirmed by the Ministry of Transport of Uzbekistan following talks between Uzbek officials and the Korea Aviation Administration in Seoul.

The negotiations centered on enhancing aviation cooperation, including lifting restrictions on the number of airlines permitted to operate between the two nations. Both parties agreed to issue the necessary permits, which will not only increase the frequency of flights but also expand their routes.

Air Samarkand, Qanot Sharq, and My Freighter (operating under the Centrum Air brand) are among the new airlines set to begin flights to South Korea. Uzbekistan Airways will continue to operate its flights as well.

The talks represent the first major update since 2018, when aviation authorities from both countries agreed to allow up to 10 flights per week for airlines on each side and granted rights to two carriers from each country. The new agreements are expected to significantly boost travel and trade between Uzbekistan and South Korea.

Representatives of Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Transport and the Embassy in South Korea were present during the discussions, highlighting the mutual commitment to strengthening aviation ties.

Earlier, South Korea has secured its place as one of Uzbekistan's top five trading partners, alongside China, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkey. In the first seven months of 2024, Uzbekistan's foreign trade turnover (FTT) totaled $36.8bn, a 5.3% increase from the same period in 2023.

Exports contributed $14.79bn, showing a slight 1.1% decline compared to January to July 2023. Imports, however, rose by 10.1%, reaching $22.05bn. Trade between Uzbekistan and South Korea during this period amounted to $1.19bn.

Currently, there are 726 joint ventures between the two nations covering industries such as energy, chemistry, automotive, electrical engineering, textiles and food production
