Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has been briefed on the socio-economic and infrastructure development of Astana during a meeting with the city’s mayor, Zhenis Kassymbek.
During the meeting, Kassymbek reported positive growth across the capital’s main economic indicators and outlined ongoing projects in infrastructure, education, healthcare and urban development.
According to the mayor, investment in fixed capital in Astana reached KZT 588bn ($1.15bn) in the first four months of 2026, marking a 9.1% increase compared to the same period last year.
The investment has been directed toward projects in manufacturing, education, healthcare, transport, trade and logistics.
Officials also updated Tokayev on the city’s transport network. Astana’s LRT light rail transit system is now fully operational, while preparations are underway for the second phase of the project as part of broader efforts to expand public transport.
Kassymbek also reported on social infrastructure and residential development. In recent years, 44 schools have been built in the capital, with another 12 educational institutions set to open for the new academic year. Authorities also plan to open two palaces for schoolchildren and six kindergartens.
Healthcare expansion was also discussed. By 2028, Astana plans to commission two perinatal centers, a multidisciplinary hospital and a reception and diagnostic complex.
The mayor additionally briefed the president on engineering and коммунal infrastructure and progress on the Smart City initiative. As part of the city’s improvement program for 2026, authorities plan to upgrade 173 courtyards and public spaces and plant more than 1.1mn green plants across the capital.
Tokayev positively assessed the city’s recent work and gave further instructions on Astana’s continued development.
