Manchester City head coach Josep “Pep” Guardiola commented on Uzbekistan's defender Abdukodir Khusanov, on January 12, ahead of the club’s English League Cup semi-final against Newcastle, highlighting the player’s adaptation, qualities, and role within the team.
Speaking at a press conference, Guardiola said that Khusanov's signing ranks among the club’s most successful transfers. He noted that although the defender had been performing at a high level in France, adapting to the English Premier League is challenging. Despite this, Guardiola described Husanov as a “special player” whose style suits Manchester City’s tactical approach.
“This is one of the best transfers in the history of the club. Despite Khusanov playing at a high level in France, it is not easy to adapt to the English Premier League. Despite this, I consider him a special player. His style of play is very suitable for us,” Guardiola said.
The City manager explained that the team’s high-pressing system benefits from Khusanov'a ability to cover space effectively in defensive zones. He added that the defender is comfortable in such situations and is currently making a significant contribution to the squad. At the same time, Guardiola noted that the player’s development with the ball remains an area for gradual improvement.
“In general, Abdukodir likes such episodes. At the moment, he is a great help to the team. We need to gradually develop his ability to work with the ball,” he said.
Guardiola also emphasized Khusanov's age and attitude, stating that the defender is still young and continues to learn. He highlighted the player’s commitment in training and willingness to improve.
“He does not shy away from learning, takes training seriously and works with all his might. In short, Abdukadir is a very reliable player,” Guardiola added.
The Spanish coach further stated that Manchester City’s decision to sign Khusanov was justified, noting that top clubs would be interested in a player with his profile. He pointed to Khusanov's defensive qualities, communication skills, and understanding of tactical instructions as key strengths.
“I said last year that the management made the right decision with Khusanov. The reason is that even the strongest clubs in the world would want to see him in their ranks. Because he has all the unique qualities needed for a defender,” Guardiola said.
He also highlighted Khusanov's technical abilities, including long passing, line-breaking play, and speed, while stressing the importance of confidence and experience for further development.
“He needs to realize that he is a stronger player than he thinks… He is still very young, so he can correct his shortcomings. The more he plays, the faster he will develop. I continue to believe in him,” the coach concluded.
Manchester City are set to face Newcastle in the semi-final of the English League Cup, with the match scheduled to kick off at 01:00 on the night of January 13–14.
