Ahead of Uzbekistan’s first-ever FIFA World Cup match, head coach Fabio Cannavaro and team captain Eldor Shomurodov outlined the team’s preparations and expectations during an official pre-match press conference.
Uzbekistan is set to make its debut appearance at the FIFA World Cup finals, with its opening match scheduled against Colombia national football team on June 18 at Estadio Azteca.
Cannavaro highlighted the significance of playing the country's first World Cup match at one of football’s most recognizable venues.
“I have been to this stadium before. Diego Maradona scored some of his most brilliant goals here. We are happy that we are holding Uzbekistan's first match at the World Cup in such a historic arena. The players are fully prepared for the match.”
The coach also commented on defender Abdukodir Khusanov, describing him as an important member of the squad.
“Khusanov is one of our most important defenders. He is still performing at a high level and has the opportunity to reach even greater heights in the future.”
Discussing Uzbekistan’s opponents in the group stage, Cannavaro said the coaching staff had conducted a detailed analysis of Colombia and emphasized the need for a disciplined approach.
“We have analyzed Colombia in detail. They are a strong team that will fight until the last minute. They have not only James Rodriguez, but also other dangerous players. We will try to show our potential, playing disciplined and careful football.”
Cannavaro also acknowledged the absence of midfielder Jaloliddin Masharipov, who is unavailable for the tournament because of injury.
Reflecting on his own experience as a player, the former World Cup winner said he has shared lessons from past tournaments with the squad.
“I also made my debut at the World Cup once. I am now sharing those experiences with the players. To achieve great results, you need to overcome difficulties and prove your capabilities. Football is developing in Uzbekistan, academies and infrastructure are being paid great attention. We need to gain maximum experience from this tournament.”
Team captain Shomurodov said preparations had gone according to plan and described the atmosphere within the squad ahead of the opening match.
“The mood of our team is excellent. There is excitement because this is our first time participating in the World Cup, but there is no pressure. It is a great honor for me to lead the national team as captain in this competition.”
The striker also addressed supporters and underlined the importance of fan backing throughout the tournament.
“We hope for a positive result tomorrow. I ask our fans to continue to support us. Our coach repeats one thing every day: ‘The team that plays with all its heart on the field wins.’ And we are ready to give our all on the field tomorrow.”
Uzbekistan will face Colombia in its opening Group K fixture at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Kickoff is scheduled for 07:00 Tashkent time on June 18.
