On the sidelines of the Aral Culture Summit in Nukus, Uzbekistan, the Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen sustainable development initiatives in Karakalpakstan — a region severely affected by the Aral Sea environmental crisis.

Situated in northwestern Uzbekistan, the Republic of Karakalpakstan was once nourished by the Aral Sea, formerly the world's fourth-largest lake. This vast body of water supported agriculture, sustained livelihoods, and fueled a flourishing fishing industry. However, extensive water diversion projects launched in the 1960s triggered a dramatic decline in the lake’s size. By the 2010s, the sea had largely vanished, resulting in ecological collapse and severe consequences for local communities.
The newly formed partnership between ACDF and UNDP aims to boost community involvement and support efforts to tackle the persistent challenges facing the region. The Memorandum of Understanding outlines plans to implement innovative sustainable development approaches to help rejuvenate one of Uzbekistan’s most at-risk areas.
With UNDP’s more than 25 years of experience in the region, the agreement prioritizes human capital development, climate resilience, and environmental protection. This collaboration highlights both organizations’ dedication to promoting inclusive growth and strengthening resilience in the Aral Sea region.

During the signing ceremony, Akiko Fujii, UNDP Resident Representative in Uzbekistan, highlighted the significance of culture in development, stating:
“Cultures shape people’s lives, relations between people and the world around us, including the nature and environment. Investment in cultures therefore has direct impacts on people’s lives and human development. UNDP remains committed to continuing our support to the Aral Sea, which represents resilience and sustainable renewal.”
Gayane Umerova, Chairperson of ACDF, stressed the vital role of culture in sustainable development, noting that the Aral Sea region holds cultural potential beyond its environmental challenges. She highlighted culture as a key driver for community inspiration, identity, and sustainable progress.
The Aral Culture Summit is centered around the theme of regional revival, aiming to strengthen community identity while addressing the region's social and environmental challenges. It is dedicated to the transformation of the Aral Sea region through the convergence of culture, art, science, and design.
