Dense fog has severely impacted air travel in Uzbekistan, with restrictions placed on the arrival and departure of flights at the airports in Nukus, Urgench, and Fergana since early morning January 6, Uzbekistan Airports reports.
The low visibility has forced several flights to be rerouted or delayed. Notably, Uzbekistan Airways flight HY-9638, traveling from St. Petersburg to Urgench, was diverted to Bukhara, where it landed at 06:04. Other flights affected include the HY-51/52 services between Tashkent and Urgench, which have been delayed. The plane from Tashkent to Urgench is now expected to depart at 12:00, with the return flight rescheduled for 14:15.
Flight HY-11 from Tashkent to Nukus has also been delayed until 11:30 local time due to the thick fog in Nukus, while restrictions have been imposed at Fergana Airport. The Silk Avia flight US-401 on the Tashkent-Fergana route has been rescheduled for 11:20, though the airport is still operating normally for departures.
Fortunately, restrictions at Urgench Airport have now been lifted, and operations have resumed. Uzbekistan Airways flight HY-51 to Urgench has been rescheduled for 13:00, and flight HY-11 to Nukus will now depart at 12:30. Silk Avia’s US-401 flight to Fergana is set to depart at 11:40.
Flight TK262, flying from Istanbul to Urgench, had a particularly challenging time navigating the fog. After multiple attempts to land, the aircraft successfully touched down following an extended period in the air, circling for about an hour longer than originally planned.
The Boeing 737, a commonly used medium-haul aircraft, carries 26,020 liters of fuel (approximately 6,875 gallons) on average. This fuel capacity typically allows the aircraft to fly for up to 6 hours, which helped the plane remain airborne while waiting for improved visibility.
The disruptions due to weather conditions highlight the challenges posed by adverse foggy conditions, which can significantly affect flight schedules and operations, particularly when low visibility prevents safe landings. The airports are now slowly returning to normal operations, with most flights rescheduled and restrictions lifted at Urgench Airport.
As weather conditions stabilize, it is expected that further delays may be minimized, though passengers are advised to check for updates before traveling.
