On December 13, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev marked a historic moment in Uzbekistan’s energy sector by announcing the launch of 18 new energy projects worth $3.7bn. These include solar and wind power plants in Bukhara, Navoi, Namangan, and Tashkent regions, totaling nearly 2.3 GW of capacity. For the first time in Uzbekistan, large-scale 300 MW storage systems have been built in Andijan and Fergana.
Other major projects include a 400 MW power station in Kashkadarya, a modern cogeneration plant in Tashkent, and four small hydropower stations in Andijan, Surkhandarya, and Tashkent regions. In partnership with international companies, the construction of six power plants with a total capacity of 2.5 GW and an investment of $3.5bn will begin in Fergana, Samarkand, Navoi, Tashkent, and Tashkent city.
These initiatives will generate an additional 9.5bn kWh of electricity, save 2.5bn cubic meters of natural gas, and reduce harmful emissions by 4.6mn tons. Over 4mn households will receive reliable, clean energy.
Overall, Uzbekistan plans to produce 84bn kWh of electricity in the next year, a 50% increase compared to 2016.
These projects are being implemented in collaboration with our reliable partners, including “Masdar,” “ACWA Power,” “AKSA Energy,” and prestigious companies from China and Germany.
“Considering that all of them are direct foreign investments, this is a clear reflection of the trust in us and the reforms we are implementing,” said the president.
In this regard, the president expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of the entire nation to those participating in the event in person and via video communication, including Sultan Al-Jobir, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technologies of the UAE and Chairman of the Board of Directors of “Masdar,” Suhayl al-Mazruiy, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure of the UAE, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, Minister of Energy of Saudi Arabia, Alparslon Bayraktar, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Turkey, Muhammad Abunayyan, Chairman of the Board of “ACWA Power,” Jamil Kazanchi, Chairman of the Board of “AKSA Enerji,” and representatives of China’s “China Energy,” “China Datang,” and Germany’s “Hyper Partners.”
Special thanks were also extended to the Asian Development Bank, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the World Bank for their financial and technical support in implementing these projects.
