Afghanistan recorded 2,127 security incidents from May 14 to July 31, 2024, reflecting a 53% increase compared to the same period in 2023, according to a report from the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. There has also been a rise in land disputes, with 35 cases compared to 28 in 2023. Most of these disputes occurred in the southern and southeastern regions, which recorded 19 and 7 incidents, respectively.
Moreover, the update addresses the efforts of Islamic Emirate officials to enhance regional cooperation through diplomatic travels. Despite these moves, the regime has yet to gain political recognition from the international community. According to political analyst Ahmad Khan Andar, while security has improved under the Islamic Emirate’s rule, there has been little global political engagement.
Another analyst, Aziz Maarej, noted the importance of these diplomatic trips in addressing Afghanistan’s internal challenges and establishing foreign relations.
The United Nations raised concerns over issues such as public punishments, casualties caused by landmines, and recent clashes between Islamic Emirate forces and Pakistani troops in the Khost and Paktia provinces. The Islamic Emirate has not made any official comments on these matters.
