Russia is in the process of developing a new tourist card for Uzbek citizens, TASS reports. The initiative, managed by the Russian Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Finance, will utilize the Mir payment system. This card will enable transactions through virtual accounts.
Uzbek citizens are the largest group of visitors to Russia. In 1H24, there were 1.8 mn visits by nationals of Uzbekistan to Russia, marking a 6.4% increase from the previous year.
In December 2022, the Russian government announced the development of this tourist card, intended to be based on the Mir payment system. However, since autumn 2022, Mir cards have not been operational in Uzbekistan due to technical issues.
In early 2023, Mamarizo Nurmuratov, Chairman of the Central Bank of Uzbekistan, confirmed that efforts are being made to restore the acceptance of these cards in Uzbekistan.
