Kazakhstan's Minister of Transport, Marat Karabaev, visited Montreal, Canada, for the 14th ICAO Air Navigation Conference (AN-Conf/14), where he engaged in discussions with officials from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at ICAO's headquarters. The meetings aimed to establish direct flights between Kazakhstan and New York, marking a significant step in enhancing air connectivity between the two regions.
The negotiations focused on the logistics required to launch these direct flights. Both Kazakhstan and the FAA agreed to collaborate on issues such as the timely delivery of aircraft and the allocation of flight slots. The direct flights are scheduled to commence by the end of 2025, with a planned frequency of at least two flights per week. This initiative is expected to bolster economic ties and facilitate greater business and tourism opportunities between Kazakhstan and the United States.
From August 26 to 30, FAA experts conducted a preliminary flight safety assessment (IASA) in Astana. This assessment is a key component in obtaining Category 1 (CAT1) certification from the FAA, which is required for the launch of direct air services. Achieving CAT1 status will ensure that Kazakh airlines meet international safety standards and enhance their operational capabilities.
Recent developments in Kazakhstan's aviation sector include ongoing upgrades to infrastructure and compliance with international safety standards. The Kazakh government has invested significantly in modernizing its aviation facilities and improving air traffic management to support the anticipated increase in international flights.
Moreover, the introduction of direct flights to New York aligns with Kazakhstan’s broader strategy to expand its global air connectivity and strengthen its economic relations with major international markets. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), enhancing air links between emerging markets and established global hubs is crucial for fostering economic growth and international collaboration.
