Mutually beneficial cooperation between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in the field of sustainable development is not just an opportunity, but a pressing necessity, according to Zulfiya Suleimenova, former Minister of Ecology of Kazakhstan and now Advisor to the President of Kazakhstan and Special Representative of the President for International Environmental Cooperation.
In an interview with Daryo, Suleimenova emphasized that both countries, with their wealth of experience and completed projects in sustainable development, have much to learn from each other.
Uzbekistan has extensive experience in planting saxaul trees, and we have already sent a delegation to study this expertise, as Kazakhstan faces similar challenges in areas affected by the drying of the Aral Sea,
- said Zulfiya Suleimenova.
She also highlighted that Kazakhstan has substantial potential in addressing climate change, particularly in areas such as transparency in greenhouse gas emissions reporting and in developing an emissions trading system.
Kazakhstan has been conducting greenhouse gas emission inventories since 2010 and is the first developing country to create an emissions trading system. We are ready to share our experience with Uzbekistan and exchange best practices, including in the development of carbon markets,
- added Suleimenova.
Responding to a question about the upcoming referendum on building a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan, Suleimenova stressed the importance of prioritizing social institutions.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, in his political platform, emphasizes that it is crucial for the state to hear the voice of its citizens. Therefore, while there is an understanding of the importance of nuclear energy, the final decision should be made by the people. We will closely monitor the referendum,
- concluded Zulfiya Suleimenova.
It was previously reported that the referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan will be held on October 6, 2024. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev highlighted that the development of nuclear energy is a timely solution in the context of a global energy shortage. He also noted that the referendum will serve as a step in advancing national dialogue and will be an example of the "listening state" concept in action.
