Central Bank of Uzbekistan has released updated statistics on the problem loans (non-performing loans or NPLs) of commercial banks in Uzbekistan as of July 1, 2024.
The overall loan portfolio of commercial banks in Uzbekistan increased from UZS 490.3 trillion ($38.9bn) in June 2024 to UZS 494 trillion ($39.3bn) in July 2024, reflecting a modest growth of 0.75%. However, the total amount of NPLs decreased from UZS 21 trillion ($1.7bn) to UZS 20 trillion ($1.6bn), a reduction of UZS 936 bn ($74mn), or 4.47%. Consequently, the overall NPL ratio dropped from 4.3% to 4.0%.
State-owned banks saw an increase in their loan portfolios from UZS 343.5 trillion ($27.3bn) in June to UZS 346 trillion ($27.4bn) in July, marking a 0.59% growth. However, their NPLs decreased from UZS 16.4 trillion ($1.3bn) to UZS 15.1 trillion ($1.2bn), an 8.07% reduction. The NPL ratio for state-owned banks declined from 4.8% to 4.4%.
The National Bank of Uzbeistan loan portfolio increased from UZS 100.7 trillion ($8bn) to UZS 101.7 trillion ($8.07bn), while NPLs decreased from UZS 3.7 trillion ($292mn) to UZS 3 trillion ($232.5bn), a notable drop of 20.46%. The NPL ratio decreased from 3.7% to 2.9%. SQB's loan portfolio increased slightly from UZS 60.1 trillion ($4.77bn) to UZS 60.3 trillion ($4.79bn), and its NPL decreased from UZS 2.6 trillion ($207.4mn) to UZS 2.4 trillion ($189mn), an 8.85% decrease. The NPL ratio decreased from 4.3% to 3.9%.
Private banks also showed changes, as their overall loan portfolio increased from 146,790 billion soums in June to 148,451 billion soums in July, a growth of 1.13%. NPLs in this category increased from 4,508 billion soums to 4,898 billion soums, an increase of 8.65%. The NPL ratio for other banks increased from 3.1% to 3.3%.
Kapitalbank's loan portfolio increased from UZS 29 trillion ($2.3bn) in June to UZS 29.3 trillion ($2.33bn) in July, while problem loans increased from UZS 779 bn ($62mn) to UZS 859 bn ($68mn), an increase of 10.27%. The NPL ratio increased from 2.7% to 2.9%. HamkorBank's loan portfolio increased from UZS 17.7 trillion ($1.4bn) in June to UZS 18 trillion ($1.43bn) in July, while NPL decreased from UZS 220 bn ($17.5mn) to UZS 215 bn ($17mn), a decrease of 2.27%. The NPL ratio remained at 1.2%.
The data for July 2024 shows a general improvement in the problem loan situation for Uzbek commercial banks compared to June 2024. The overall reduction in problem loans and the decrease in the NPL ratio indicate positive trends in the banking sector.
