President Sadyr Japarov announced that Kyrgyz citizens might soon be able to trade their old cars for electric vehicles (EVs), on June 7. This announcement was made during a meeting with Muhammad Sulaiman Al Jasser, President of the Islamic Development Bank, Kloop reports. Japarov disclosed that Kyrgyzstan, in collaboration with China, is developing an electric car factory with an annual production capacity of up to 80,000 vehicles.
However, some activists are advocating for the retention of trolleybuses in Bishkek, arguing that replacing them with electric buses may not be the best solution. They note that the batteries for electric buses are not recycled locally, emit harmful substances, and lose efficiency due to extreme climate changes.
Additionally, the maintenance and operation costs of these buses are higher, posing further environmental degradation risks.
