An investigation into the tragic incident involving the consumption of syrup, which resulted in the deaths of 68 children and the disability of 16 others in Uzbekistan, has prompted a thorough examination of the producer, Marion Biotech Pvt., based in India.
According to reports, Sachin Jain, the head of Marion Biotech Pvt., was searched by the Department of the State Security Service of Uzbekistan on May 4, 2023. Subsequently, the Yunusabad district court issued a decision to arrest Sachin Jain in absentia, following a request from the Deputy Prosecutor General. Sachin Jain faced trial on May 10, 2023, where he was accused of various crimes related to the production and distribution of low-quality drugs, resulting in fatalities and injuries.
As a result, preventive measures in the form of imprisonment were ordered, pending Sachin Jain's apprehension. However, Sachin Jain has not been apprehended thus far, with reports suggesting he may be residing in Dubai.
Efforts to bring Sachin Jain to justice have faced obstacles, including challenges in obtaining cooperation from Indian authorities. Despite inquiries sent through official channels, including the Ministry of External Affairs and Marion Biotech Pvt., the Indian side has not responded to requests for information regarding the company and the criminal cases.
Furthermore, reports have surfaced indicating that Sachin Jain was briefly detained in the UAE following Uzbekistan's announcement of his search. Uzbekistan promptly provided the necessary documents authorizing his arrest to the UAE authorities. However, it was later reported that Sachin Jain was released in the UAE, complicating the extradition process.
