The Abay region of Kazakhstan will see the construction of five new reservoirs with a combined capacity of over 156 mn cubic meters of water. This initiative, reported by Ulysmedia.kz and confirmed by Minister of Water Management and Irrigation Nurjon Nurjigitov, aims to enhance the region’s water management and support local economic growth.
On May 23, the ministry announced the construction of two reservoirs on the Keldimurat and Kokterek rivers in the Urjar region, with capacities of 30 mn and 31.4 mn cubic meters, respectively. Additionally, a 30 mn cubic meter reservoir will be built in the Kokpektin district, and two more in the Aksuat region with capacities of 20 mn and 45 mn cubic meters each.
Minister Nurjigitov highlighted the benefits of these new reservoirs, stating they will improve living standards, support economic development, and ensure a stable water supply for agriculture.
"The new reservoirs will significantly improve the standard of living of the local population, make an important contribution to the economic development of the region, and provide agriculture with stable water," he said.
This project is part of a broader plan to enhance water storage across Kazakhstan. From 2024 to 2026, 20 new reservoirs with a total volume of 2.4 cubic kilometers will be built in nine regions. This will expand irrigated land by 250,000 hectares, reduce flooding risks in 70 rural settlements, and decrease Kazakhstan's reliance on neighboring countries for water by 25%.
