Uzbekistan is witnessing a decline in its energy sector, specifically in gas and oil extraction, as well as petrol production, the State Statistics Agency reports. As of March 2024, gas production recorded 3.9 bn cubic meters, a reduction of 1.4 bn cubic meters from the figures reported in 2019.
The report indicates a decrease in oil production, which amounted to 60,600 tonnes in March 2024, down by 7,600 tonnes compared to the same month in the previous year. Similarly, gasoline production decreased, noted at 119,500 tonnes, which is 1,900 tonnes less than the production in the corresponding period last year.
The downturn in the energy sector impacted other industrial products as well. Cement production, for instance, decreased by 216,400 tonnes to a total of 905,500 tonnes.
An economist Otabek Bakirov, who commented on the situation, stated, "Those who need to be questioned to get an answer to this question should at least show their faces, admit their mistakes, show courage and share responsibility in these difficult days of development. But instead of communicating with the people and businesses, which is so important now, they are hiding in back offices, sinking industry in favour of their masters in the north and accelerating economic degradation with the mismanagement based on misappropriation they see as slavery."
Bakirov emphasizes the need for transparent communication between the government, businesses, and the public to effectively address these issues.
