To bolster collaborative efforts in the preservation and promotion of Central Asian heritage, the International Institute of Central Asia (IICA) has inked a Cooperation Agreement with the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS), IICA reported.
The agreement, sealed during a meeting at the IICA headquarters with the Director of IICAS, Evren Rutbil, signifies a mutual commitment to fortify sustainable partnerships in various domains such as cultural heritage, history, archaeology, architecture, ethnography, and literature pertaining to the Silk Road, with a special focus on Central Asian nations.
IICAS, an international organization dedicated to the historical and cultural development of Central Asia, was established in 1995 and is headquartered in Samarkand. Currently fostering collaborations with over ten member countries including China, South Korea, Azerbaijan, Iran, Türkiye, Pakistan, India, and Central Asian nations, IICAS has been instrumental in championing initiatives aimed at preserving the rich heritage of the region.
Rutbil provided insights into the diverse activities and projects undertaken by IICAS, elucidating its endeavors in researching the historical and cultural legacy of Central Asia. Highlighting one of its notable achievements, Rutbil pointed out the successful inclusion of 33 cultural heritage sites from the region onto the UNESCO World Heritage List, a testament to the institute's dedication to safeguarding and promoting the cultural treasures of Central Asia.
Furthermore, discussions revolved around the upcoming 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference slated for 2025 in Samarkand. It was underscored that this milestone event, the first of its kind to be held outside Paris since 1985, will serve as a platform to spotlight the significant civilizational potential of Uzbekistan and the wider Central Asian region, garnering global attention toward their rich cultural heritage.
In addition to deliberations on the UNESCO conference, the meeting delved into the current landscape and promising avenues of collaboration between research institutions, reflecting a shared commitment towards advancing scholarly endeavors and preserving the cultural legacy of Central Asia for future generations.
