The United States is making efforts to remove the Taliban from the list of designated terrorist groups, Aamaj News reports.
Michael McCaul, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, expressed concerns about the Biden administration's approach, stating that despite the Taliban being recognized as a terrorist group, the administration is seeking to alter this designation.
During a meeting on Afghanistan, McCaul criticized the Biden administration's strategy, emphasizing a perceived deterioration in the Taliban's behavior. He remarked on the failure of the 20-year efforts in Afghanistan and accused the Biden government of lacking concrete plans for the Afghan people. McCaul highlighted the restrictive policies enforced by the Taliban, including forbidding women to leave their houses without a male escort and denying education to girls.
McCall further alleged that the Taliban is harboring members of al-Qaeda, and he raised concerns about the sale of weapons and equipment left by the United States in Afghanistan to terrorist groups. He specifically pointed out that Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Minister of Interior of the Taliban, provided refuge to Ayman al-Zawahiri, the former leader of Al-Qaeda.
Expressing apprehension about China's growing influence in Afghanistan, McCaul urged the Biden government to reconsider its policy towards the country. He emphasized the need for the United States to support the people of Afghanistan rather than the Taliban.
Earlier, it was reported that Aibek Smadiarov, the official representative of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced that the Kazakhstani authorities have decided to exclude the Taliban Islamist movement, operating in Afghanistan and Pakistan, from the list of banned organizations.
