At the initiative of the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, he held a telephone conversation with the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov.
Local TV channel "Altyn Asyr" reports that the parties discussed preparations for the upcoming COP-28 Climate Conference in Dubai (UAE), in particular, the interaction between the two countries in the field of reducing methane emissions into the atmosphere and the possibility of legal consolidation of this cooperation.
Berdimuhamedov said he considers the issue as one of the priorities of Turkmenistan's foreign policy.
Turkmenistan and the US agreed in May to form a working group to reduce methane emissions and develop a joint investment plan.
Kerry said that global environmental challenges pose new tasks, primarily concerning the modernisation of national strategies and the inclusion of modern standards for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
"At the same time, it is required to address the issues of investment in renewable energy sources, the development of technologies for adaptation to climate change."
Previously it was reported that Turkmenistan during COP-28 plans to announce its accession to the Global Methane Pledge.
Methane is a threat to the climate 80 times more potent than CO2.
Turkmenistan is one of the key suppliers of energy resources in the region. The fuel and energy sector accounts for the majority of human-caused methane emissions.
