China has successfully sent its first batch of cargo to Afghanistan via a land route, marking a pivotal moment in regional trade, Sputnik Afghanistan reported on September 1. The cargo, consisting of exotic dried fruits destined for Afghan markets, commenced its journey four days ago when trucks crossed the Pakistani border near the town of Sost in Gilgit-Baltistan, one of the two territories of Kashmir without the status of a province.
The transit of these goods was accomplished through the utilization of the TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) transportation system, which operates in accordance with the Customs Convention on the International Carriage of Goods using the TIR Carnet 1975. This system facilitates streamlined and secure cross-border transport, providing an efficient means of moving goods between countries.
On Auguts 31 the trucks carrying the cargo arrived at the Torkham checkpoint on the Afghan border, marking a historic moment in the region's trade dynamics. The Pakistani news agency, BNN, hailed this development as a revolutionary milestone with far-reaching implications for regional commerce.
This achievement underscores China's commitment to enhancing trade and economic connectivity with Afghanistan through alternative routes, especially in light of the challenging geopolitical situation in the country. While Afghanistan's traditional trade routes have faced disruption, the successful land transit of goods from China demonstrates the potential for diversification and resilience in the face of shifting circumstances.
Moreover, Pakistan is actively working to launch a transit and trade management system aimed at simplifying the passage of goods at the Torkham border. This initiative is expected to have a significant impact on bilateral trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan, further enhancing economic ties between the two nations. It is anticipated that this streamlined trade process will not only benefit both countries but also contribute to regional economic integration and stability.
