Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey has been cleared of all charges of sexual assault after a four-week trial in London, CNN reports on July 26. The jury at Southwark Crown Court found him not guilty of seven counts of sexual assault and two counts of other serious sexual offenses. The allegations covered a period between 2004 and 2013, during which Spacey served as the artistic director at the Old Vic theatre in London.
Following the verdict, Spacey expressed his gratitude to the jury for carefully examining all the evidence and facts before reaching their decision. He appeared emotional as he thanked the court staff and his legal team for their support throughout the trial.
The trial was highly publicised, and prosecutor Christine Agnew described Spacey as a "sexual bully" who "delights in making others feel powerless and uncomfortable." However, Spacey vehemently denied the charges, stating that they were "madness" and a "stab in the back."
During the trial, four complainants came forward with allegations against Spacey, describing incidents of sexual assault and inappropriate behavior. Spacey refuted all the accusations and claimed that the encounters were either consensual or did not happen at all.
The verdict comes after Spacey's return to acting in recent years following his departure from the Netflix series "House of Cards" in 2017 due to allegations of misconduct on and off the set.
While the court has now cleared Spacey of the charges in this particular trial, it's important to note that he has faced other legal challenges in the past. Last year, a New York jury found Spacey not liable for battery on allegations from actor Anthony Rapp dating back to 1986.
