On July 3 RIA Novosti reported that on the night of July 2, Swiss authorities in Lausanne detained seven individuals in relation to the ongoing riots, with six of them being minors.
“We are talking about three girls of Portuguese, Bosnian and Somali origin, as well as boys of Georgian and Serbian origin, as well as a Swiss, who are from 15 to 17 years old. The only adult detainee is a 24-year-old Swiss,” the police report says.
The unrest in Lausanne resulted in the detention of seven individuals, with six of them being minors. These young people reportedly engaged in various acts of violence, such as attacking shops, assaulting policemen, and throwing stones. The number of participants in the riots exceeded 100, and shockingly, among them were children under the age of 15.
The riots in Lausanne were seemingly inspired by the ongoing situation in France. The initial protests in France were triggered by the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old teenager by the police during a routine road check in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris, on June 27. Law enforcement officers claim that the young man refused to comply with their instructions, leading to the tragic outcome.
The protests quickly escalated across France, with reports of cars being set on fire, police and local authority buildings being attacked, and shops and banks being looted. The situation became so severe in certain areas that special forces had to be deployed, along with the use of armoured vehicles and helicopters. The number of detentions reached approximately two and a half thousand people, with a significant portion of them being minors.
The widespread dissemination of calls to take to the streets through social media likely played a role in mobilising the youth and amplifying the unrest in both France and Switzerland. The presence of minors among the rioters raises concerns about the vulnerability and influence of young individuals in such circumstances.
Authorities in both countries will likely intensify their efforts to address the root causes of the unrest, enhance law enforcement measures, and engage with communities to prevent further escalation and protect the well-being of all citizens.
