From January to June 2024, trade volume between Afghanistan and Pakistan totalled $1.8bn, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce reports. Afghan exports to Pakistan were valued at $329mn, marking a 31% decrease compared to the same period last year. In contrast, imports from Pakistan increased by 11%.
This decrease in Afghan exports combined with a rise in imports highlights an expanding trade imbalance between the two countries. The data reflects Afghanistan’s ongoing struggle to achieve a balanced trade relationship with Pakistan.
Pakistan remains a key partner for Afghanistan’s exports, predominantly directed towards South Asian markets. The current trade challenges with Pakistan have led to a decline in export figures. Traders have highlighted the need to address these issues to improve export levels.
Similarly, Zadran Naseri, the trader, noted, “Pakistan has not yet implemented promised tariff reductions. We urge the government to either establish alternative trade routes or adjust tariffs on goods imported from Pakistan.”
Reports from Pakistani media indicate a 40% reduction in imports from Afghanistan to Pakistan for the 2024 fiscal year compared to the previous year.
