Iran to enhance energy cooperation with neighbors
Iran has taken strides in enhancing energy cooperation with its neighboring countries, setting the stage for electricity exchange agreements with Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. The progress in this endeavor was highlighted by Iran's Energy Minister, Ali Akbar Mehrabian, during a meeting with Uzbek Energy Minister Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov in Tehran on March 4, as disclosed by ASIA-Plus.
Mehrabian underscored the existing electricity exchange arrangements with most of Iran's neighbors, emphasizing the potential for further collaboration among Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan in the realm of electricity exchange.
During the discussion, Mehrabian emphasized the readiness of Iranian companies to participate in various electrical projects in Uzbekistan, offering expertise in exporting electrical components and equipment, constructing power facilities, and establishing production lines for manufacturing electrical equipment.
Mehrabian outlined potential areas of collaboration, including the construction of thermal- and hydroelectric power plants and the export of technical and engineering services. In response, the Uzbek Energy Minister acknowledged Iran's expertise in power plant construction, ranking it among the top five countries in the region.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Minister of Energy also held discussions with Tajik Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Daler Juma, through a video conference on February 28. During this meeting, Mehrabian reiterated Iran’s commitment to advancing joint projects with Tajikistan, emphasizing the importance of follow-up actions from the Iran-Tajikistan joint cooperation document agreed upon during the 16th meeting of the Tajik-Iranian Joint Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation.
Mehrabian highlighted Iranian companies' readiness to contribute to Tajikistan's projects, particularly in the deployment of large turbines and other technical sectors, offering to expedite project timelines.
Among the projects discussed during the virtual meeting were the Sangtuda 2 hydropower plant and the construction of a solar power plant in the Vorukh region.
